HAMPSTEAD — Herman Ross Honeycutt Sr., 86, formerly of Raleigh, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018.
Herman was born May 24, 1932, in Anson County, Lilesville, North Carolina. He spent his young life in Lilesville on a small farm where he became friends with his wife to be, Janet, at an early age. In high school, Herman was a three-sport athlete. Herman attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for one year before enlisting in the U.S. Army August 1952. He and Janet then married in 1952. He then resumed his military career and was stationed in Eritrea in Northeast Africa until August 1955. Upon returning from the U.S. Army, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1959. At that time, UNC at Chapel Hill was the only institution of pharmaceutical education in the state. He began his pharmacy apprenticeship at the Peace Street Pharmacy in Raleigh and later worked at Kerr Drugs in Cameron Village of Raleigh. Afterwards, he became owner of Honeycutt’s Pharmacy in Raleigh’s Brentwood community and served the area for many years.
He was an avid golfer, and he and his family were members of the Raleigh Country Club for many years. He loved the game of golf and competed in numerous golf tournaments and was an accomplished golfer. He later taught his wife, Janet, to play golf, and they both spent many happy years playing golf together creating special memories with friends and family.
His pharmacy career later took him to downtown Raleigh, where he became of the owner of Arnold’s Pharmacy on Hillsborough Street, serving the community for several years. Afterwards, he moved the pharmacy to another Hillsborough Street location before retiring in 1995. Upon retirement, he and Janet moved to the Topsail Greens golf community in Hampstead. They developed special friendships in the Hampstead community in their later years. He passed away Sept. 4, 2018, surrounded by family at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Lifecare Center, where he was kept comfortable and nurtured by family and the loving staff. Arbor Landing of Hampstead also provided caring support during his final journey, or as he would say “his back 9.”
