Charles Edward ‘Zak’ Zakszeski, 75, retired from the Army after 28 years’ service

BOILING SPRING LAKES — Retired U.S. Army Col. Charles Edward “Zac” Zakszeski, 75, passed away Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018, at Carillon Assisted Living Center surrounded by his loving family.

Zak was born on July 9, 1943, in Mount Holly, New Jersey. He graduated high school in 1961 and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965. He attended Officer Candidate School in 1967 and graduated from the University of Tampa in 1973 with a B.S. Degree in Business Management. During his distinguished 28-year career, Col. Zakszeski’s awards and decorations included the Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Legion of Merit and the Transportation Corps St. Christopher Award. While in the U.S. Army, Col. Zak was the Commander of the 440th Transportation Company at Can Tho, Vietnam, Port Battalion Commander of San Pedro, California, attended and graduated from the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and finished his career as the commander of the 597th Transportation Brigade Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point in Southport from July 1991 to July 1993.

Zak was an avid fisherman, enjoyed playing golf at Oak Island Country Club and having a beer or wine with friends at the 19th hole, in downtown Southport, and at the VFW Post 10400 in Boiling Spring Lakes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Eleanor Zakszeski; brother, John; and sister, Donna.

He is survived by his wife of almost 47 years, Sharon; two sons, C.J. of Winnabow and Stephen, and his wife, Julia, of Chester, Maryland; daughter, Gayle Hubbard, and her husband, Jeremy, of Richmond, Texas; four grandchildren, Conner, Mary, Mckenzie and Dewayne; brother, Scott Zakszeski, and his wife, Linda, of Homosassa, Florida; sister, Lynda Zakszeski and Andrew of Beverly, New Jersey; and sister, Patricia Kramer, and her husband, Kirk, of Kittery Point, Maine.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service Chapel, Southport.
