WILMINGTON — Claire Hughes, 99, died Tuesday, July 3, 2018, in Wilmington while living at Spring Arbor. Claire was born Jan. 11, 1919, at home to her parents, Birt Frank and Robbie Sandlin Hughes in Wilmington.
Claire always lived on Dock Street until she moved to Spring Arbor in 2009. Claire was a charter member of St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she attended regularly and played the piano for children’s Sunday school. Claire was a graduate of New Hanover High School and University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She began her career working at the Atlantic Coastline; however, she was the city clerk for the City of Wilmington for over 30 years. Claire was well known for her organization and professionalism.
Claire was preceded in death by her parents and many close cousins. She is survived by her cousins, Joan Sandlin Bowen of Lumberton, Dick Sandlin of Wilmington, Cindy Sandlin Stout of Wilmington Bob Sandlin of Beaufort and Mitchell Sandlin of Norfolk; and caregiver, Becky Barefoot.
Claire always appreciated the good care she received while living at Spring Arbor. Her gentleness, sense of humor and dancing will be missed by all!
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 10, at St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1416 Market St., Wilmington.
