LELAND — John Anthony Schmidt, 82, passed away Monday, April 9, 2018, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born June 15, 1935, in Williamsport, Pa., son of the late John F. Schmidt and Mary Miele Schmidt.
He was the grand knight with the Knights of Columbus Chapter 1074, a member of the Kiwanis Club and an avid golfer. Mr. Schmidt was a graduate of Virginia Military Institute, where he had a scholarship to play football.
Surviving are his wife, Marion C. Schmidt; four children, Cathleen Gormley, and her husband, Brian, John Schmidt Jr., Theresa Hughes, and her husband, Sam, and Joseph M. Schmidt; and seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, April 12, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, 4108 S. College Road, Wilmington. A funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Basilica Shrine of St. Mary, Wilmington.
