SOUTHPORT — Retired U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Calvin Donald Thompson, 87, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2018.
Mr. Thompson was born Dec. 18, 1930, in Iowa to the late Lester and Ruth Thompson.
He was one of 12 children. When he was 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and spent the next 24 years in service, rising to the highest enlisted rank of command sergeant major. He served in the Korean Conflict and had four tours in Vietnam. Retired U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Thompson loved his Lord, his family, his church and his Bible. He also enjoyed his dogs and watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.
Survivors include his two sons, Keith Thompson of Georgia and Mike Thompson of Southport; daughter, Jennifer Staresinic of Las Vegas; and three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by a son, Donald Thompson.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, March 26, at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Wrenn and the Rev. Jeff Saggus officiating.
