Jean Leigh Stone Crawford, 83, admired far and wide for her humor and compassionate nature

WILMINGTON — Jean Leigh Stone Crawford, 83, passed away Friday, March 2, 2018, after a long illness surrounded by her loving family.

Jean was born Dec. 3, 1934, to Fred London Stone and Alma Thomas Stone, who preceded her in death.

A native of Sanford, Jean graduated from Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C., before matriculating to Salem College in Winston-Salem in 1956.

Married in 1960 to Branch Merrimon Crawford, they lived in Greensboro, N.C., where she was a successful real estate agent for many years, continuing her career after moving to Wilmington, N.C.

Jean was beloved far and wide for her wonderful humor, excellent cooking and her compassionate nature. Her home was always full of love and laughter, and once you became her friend, she considered you a friend for life.

Her hospitality and note writing was legendary, and the memories she created will be remembered for years and years. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Jean is survived by her husband of 58 years, Branch Merrimon Crawford, and their two daughters, Leigh Crawford Sewell and Maude Merrimon Crawford; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the nurses at Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their loving care.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 11, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Hampstead.
