
WILMINGTON — Andrew Marshall “Andy” Whittington, 45, passed away Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCare Center in Wilmington.
He was the beloved husband of Charity Rose Miller Whittington and father to Andrew Marshall “Whit” Whittington Jr.
Andy was born April 9, 1972, in Robeson County to Nancy Cook Whittington of Rowland, N.C., and the late John H. Whittington.
He earned a B.A. in music from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) and completed his Master of Music graduate work at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
As a noted jazz pianist, Andy was a faculty member in the Department of Music at UNCW, taught many students piano privately, and performed regularly in the Wilmington community over the years.
In addition to his love of music, Andy loved his animals and was the keeper of beautiful aquariums, practiced meditation and mindfulness and treasured spending time with his loved ones.
Andy is survived by his mother, Nancy; wife, Charity; son, Whit; siblings, John H. Whittington Jr., and his wife, Rose Mary, Doug Whittington, and his wife, Eleanor, both of Rowland, Dean Whittington of Columbia Falls, Mont., Maxwell H. Whittington, and his wife, Michelle, of Lumberton, and Susan Pate, and her husband, Thomas of Bartow, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition, Andy was dearly loved by his many extended friends and family.
A celebration of Andy’s life and spirit will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 5, at the Wilmington Funeral Chapel. The family will receive relatives and friends following the service.
