WILMINGTON — Conrad Jerome Newell, 92, died peacefully surrounded by his family Monday, Nov. 13, 2017. He was born Dec. 31, 1924, in Geneva, Ala., to the late W.J. and Lilly Newell. Conrad was preceded in death by his daughter, Vicki Newell Sylvester; and five sisters and three brothers.
Conrad and his family moved to Wilmington in 1968 where he joined his brother as part owner of Newell Inc. After 35 years, the business was sold, and the Newell brothers retired. In his retirement, Conrad started a business, Newell Glass Repair. He enjoyed this new venture for 20 years. Through this new business, he made and thoroughly enjoyed many new friends.
He is survived by his wife, Marie, and their son, Gary Newell, and his wife, Tammy Parker Newell; son-in-law, David Sylvester; and six grandchildren who called him “Pop.”
Conrad was a man of strong Christian convictions and high moral values. He served the Lord faithfully throughout his adult life. He was named “Deacon Emeritus” by his church, Temple Baptist Church.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Temple Baptist Church with Senior Pastor Dr. Mark Gaskins officiating and Dr. Del Parkerson and Dr. Steve Spangler assisting.
