Lillian Campfield Hewett, 95, former teacher and piano instructor

Lillian Campfield Hewett

SHALLOTTE — Lillian Campfield Hewett, 95, was born Nov. 11, 1921, in Rutherford County to Ernest William Campfield and Hallie Harris Campfield, and passed away Friday, Sept. 29, 2017.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and two sisters, in addition her husband, Harlee Hewett; and son, Billy Scott Hewett.

She is survived by her son, Ernest Hall Hewett, and his wife, Terrah; devoted daughter-in-law, Patricia J. Hewett; granddaughter, Laurel Hewett Bellamy; and great-granddaughter, Lillian E. Bellamy.

She began playing the piano as a young child, and, at the age of 13, began playing for her home church. After graduating high school, she attended Carson-Newman College, graduating May 7, 1943, where she received a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in Piano.

Upon graduation, she received her first teaching position at Bolivia High School for the 1944 – 1945 school year. She traveled by bus from Rutherford County, N.C., to Brunswick County, N.C., and lived in the teacherage that was located across from Bolivia High School; this is where her husband of 60 years first saw her as he was traveling from Supply to Wilmington. After marrying Harlee, they made their home in Supply, N.C., where she lived the remainder of her days.

She was a teacher for the Brunswick County Public Schools for 30 years, and most of those years were spent as a third grade teacher. Once she was married, she played the piano for First Baptist Church of Shallotte, then went on to volunteer her time playing the piano and organ for an impressive 50 years at Calvary Baptist Church.

Her love of music was also shared with many children of the area as she taught piano from her home. She was also known to be the one to call on for events, as she played for countless weddings and
funerals.

During her time as a third grade teacher, at-home piano teacher, and church musician, she was also a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was involved in other church activities such as Sunday school teacher and youth leader. She was a former member of the Delta Kapa Gamma Society and the Retired Teachers Association. “Mrs. Lillian,” as she was known to many, will be missed, but the music will continue to play on in our hearts.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 2, at Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Silent Grove Cemetery, Supply.

The family will receive family and friends one hour prior to services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Calvary Baptist Church in her memory.

Online condolences may be sent to shallottefunerals.com.
