J. Edwin Brown, 76, helped establish 911 call centers in three counties

HOLDEN BEACH — J. Edwin Brown, 76, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2017, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born Feb. 17, 1941, in Wilmington, N.C., the son of the late, Margaret Gilliard Brown and Joseph Timothy Brown.

Edwin was the master control engineer for Channel 3 WWAY for 20 years and then worked for Wilmington Communications for 10 years. He also helped establish 911 call centers in three counties.

Above all else, Edwin was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family, whether it be traveling with his wife, playing pool with his daughters or countless other examples. He also loved the outdoors, including fishing, gardening and time spent on the porch swing enjoying the birds. Edwin had an intelligent and inquisitive mind and especially enjoyed history. He will be much missed by his family and all who loved him.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 55 years, Barbara Caffee Brown; two daughters, Kimberly Brown Oxendine (Dane) and Heather Wagner (Kevin); six grandchildren, Sarah, Courbyn, Tyler, Anna, Christian and Kaeden; three great-grandchildren, Knora, Savannah and Faris; brother, Harry Ray Brown (Rebecca); two sisters-in-law, Patricia Singletary and Melrose Justice; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Margaret Hicks.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 23, at Andrews Mortuary Market Chapel with the Rev. Eddie Hill officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
