OCEAN ISLE BEACH — Edgar Bourne “Ed” Harris, 69, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. 

He was born Feb. 19, 1948, in Radford, Va., the son of the late Selden H. Harris Jr. and Evelyn V. Bourne Harris.

Mr. Harris attended Allegany High School in LaVale, Md., where he was an outstanding athlete in football and wrestling.

He was a graduate of East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn., where he received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

After being employed by the Fulton County Educational System in Atlanta, Ga., and the Public Health Department in Rutherfordton, N.C., Mr. Harris moved his family to Shallotte, N.C., in 1977, where he was employed as the Public Health Director for Brunswick County before founding Comprehensive Home Health Care in 1981. Mr. Harris began with 13 employees in a tiny house in Supply, N.C., and expanded his business to include almost 800 employees in 14 offices in both North Carolina and South Carolina.

Surviving are his children, Allison H. Williams, and husband, Richard, of Shallotte, N.C., K.D. Harris Diallo, and husband, Ibrahima, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Sawyer Covington, Mason Covington, both of Mebane, N.C.; stepdaughter, Ashley Howerton and family of Greensboro, N.C.; two brothers, Selden Harris III, and his wife, Dianna, of Brandenburg, Ky., and Charles “Brownie” Harris of Wilmington, N.C.; four grandchildren, Morgan P. Williams, Mackenzie A. Williams, Sylla M. Diallo and FatimatouHaiz Diallo; several nieces and nephews; and many special friends.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 23, at Camp United Methodist Church, Shallotte.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to West Brunswick High School Athletics, 550 Whiteville Road, Shallotte, NC 28470, where he devoted many volunteer hours.
