Joan Kienker Apke, 86, member of the Ladies of the Wilmington Shrine Club

WILMINGTON — Joan Kienker Apke, 86, passed away Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017, at her home. Joan was born Feb. 1, 1931, to Frederick and Annetta Kienker in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Joan was a faithful member of Winter Park Presbyterian Church. She was an active member of Cape Fear Chapter #346 and Federal Point Chapter #361 Order of the Eastern Star and had the honor of serving as worthy matron for several terms. She was a member of the Ladies of the Wilmington Shrine Club.

Joan was proud to be a registered nurse and practiced until her retirement from New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her son, Joel Apke; and sister, June Kannenberg.

Joan is survived by her husband of 63 years, Joe Apke; two daughters, Barbara Apke and Sue Apke; son, Matt Apke, and his wife, Rhonda Apke; and two grandchildren, Joshua Apke, and his wife, Krystal, and Brianna Apke.

Family visitation will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Winter Park Presbyterian Church, Chadbourn Hall. A celebration of life ceremony will follow visitation at 3:30 p.m. at the church. Services will be officiated by the Rev. Emile Harley. Burial will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Tom Kennedy, Jim Turner, Brian Kieb, Joshua Apke, Freddie Szakasits and Jimmy Hyatt.
