
SURF CITY — Pennie Gooch Gettinger, 73, died peacefully at home with her family by her side Sunday, Aug. 13, 2017.
Mrs. Gettinger is survived by her husband of 54 wonderful years, John F. Gettinger Sr. of Surf City, N.C.; son, John F.Gettinger Jr. of Surf City, N.C.; two daughters, Vanda C. Percy of Benson, N.C., and Jennifer R. Shuman of Garner, N.C.; sister, Amy C. Poole of Wake Forest, N.C.; half-brother, Dwayne “Buddy” Gooch of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Malin Shuman, Blythe Shuman, Rohan Shuman and Elizabeth Percy, whom she loved dearly.
Pennie was born March 1, 1944, in Washington, D.C., to Macon E. Gooch Sr. of Raleigh, N.C., and Mary T. Gooch of Forest City, Pa., and grew up in Raleigh, N.C. She graduated from high school at Needham B. Broughton High School in Raleigh, N.C., in 1961. John and Pennie met while John was attending North Carolina State University pursuing his industrial engineering degree. They married Aug. 3, 1963, lived in Wake Forest and started a family.
While John’s job required the family to move, John and Pennie also began rehabbing old buildings, houses and building a successful property management company. Pennie wasn’t finished, she took college classes, raised three children and graduated from Lorraine Community College with a degree in registered nursing. She practiced nursing for 26 years and continued throughout retirement to co-manage a property management portfolio.
A visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 19, at Andrews Mortuary Hampstead Chapel with a funeral following at 11 a.m. A light reception will follow at 1005 N. New River Drive, Surf City. Buddy Dowd will be the officiant of the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Pennie’s life.
