
WILMINGTON — Mrs. Sophia R. Copes, 83, passed away Sunday, July 2, 2017, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Mrs Copes retired after 30 years’ service with Sutton Council Furniture.
Sophia was born in Bartow, Fla., on Aug. 12, 1933, the daughter of the late Michael and Kaliope Zervos Georgiades. She was also preceded in death by her son, Joe Hegler; and grandchildren, Ward Godwin, Constantine Godwin and Seth Hegler.
Surviving are her son, Charles J. Hegler of Wilmington; daughter, Cathie Perry, and her husband, Norm, of Leland; sisters, Mary Smith of Gainesville, Fla., and Anna O’Hara of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; grandchildren, Michael and Alex Godwin, Charles Julian Hegler III, Hunter Daniel Hegler and Christy Lewis; and great-grandchildren, Ian, Theron and Barrett Godwin.
The family will see friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, July 6, at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church with a Trisagion service beginning at 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 7, at the church with burial following in Oleander Memorial Gardens. Father Jon Emanuelson will officiate the service. Pallbearers will be Michael Godwin, Alex Godwin, Julian Hegler, Hunter Hegler, Norman Perry and Kenny Jackson.
The family would like to thank the entire medical staff at NHRMC and the 7th floor for the wonderful care they gave Sophia.
