
SUNSET BEACH — Robert Harrison Wright Sr., 87, passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at the SECU Lower Cape Fear Hospice, “Brunswick House,” Bolivia, N.C.
Son of the late Hilda Sutherland Wright and Paul William Wright, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Wright; and a sister, Ann Carroll Wright.
Mr. Wright was born in Columbia, S.C., on the Oct. 1, 1929. He grew up in Charlotte, N.C., where he graduated from Central High School in 1947. There he was very active in YMCA work; he then graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor degree in textile engineering.
On Sept. 10, 1950, he married the love of his life, Margaret Judd Morris, and was married for over 66 years.
Mr. Wright was very active in several Presbyterian churches in the Charlotte area, and he served as a ruling elder and deacon. He taught Sunday school and was active in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts programs. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite and the Oasis Shrine.
Mr. Wright was employed by Dan River Mills for 36 years in textile sales. After living in Lake Norman, N.C., for a time, he and Margaret retired at Sunset Beach. There, he looked forward to visits from his children and grandchildren. His hobby was working in his yard, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He was a member of Shallotte Presbyterian Church and Sea Trail Property Owners Association.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; children, Robert Wright Jr., and his wife, Terri, Pamela Wright Grady, and her husband, Jerry, Susan Derby and Charles Wright; eight grandchildren, Trey Wright, Courtney Wright, Jared Grady, Ryan Grady, Christopher Derby, and his wife, Blythe, Lindsay Derby Northington, and her husband, Sean, Sarah Derby and Matthew Wright; two great grandsons, Kayden Wright and Landon Wright; brother, Paul William Wright of Easley, S.C.; and a special friend, Nan Rex.
Memorial services will be conducted at 3 p.m., Saturday, June 10, at the Shallotte Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that monetary donations be made in his name to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
