Bernice Hewett Johnson, 78, could catch, prepare and cook all kinds of seafood

WILMINGTON — Bernice Hewett Johnson, 78, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

Born in Brunswick County, April 6, 1938, she was a longtime member of Ogden Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William G. Johnson; parents, Charles S. Hewett Sr. and Lydia Fulford Hewett; and daughter, Deborah L. Johnson.

She is survived by her daughter, Gail Johnson Milliken, and her husband, George Wayne, of Wilmington; adopted grandchildren, Holly Johnson Rodden and Jeremiah Edward Johnson; sisters, Betty Jean Jablonski of Shallotte and Carol Hewett Reynolds of Bolivia; best friend, Nancy Herndon; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Growing up in Shallotte, she knew how to catch, prepare, cook and eat all kinds of seafood, with oysters being her favorite. She loved her church and she loved her Sunday school class.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Lower Cape Fear Hospice for the love and care given to Bernice and her family.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Jan. 26, at the Freedom Baptist Church, 802 N. College Road, Wilmington. Funeral services will begin at noon officiated by the Rev. Danny Justice and the Rev. Dodd Mays. Burial will be held in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
