Alvin Grady ‘Al’ Mallard, 80, of Wilmington, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 7, 2016.
Al was born October 17, 1935, in Savannah, Ga. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He worked for Maola Milk Company and retired after 27 years of service. Al was a servant of the Lord and a member of Olivet Baptist Church.
He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life: collecting NASCAR memorabilia, ducks and lighthouses. He relished trips to the mountains, cool crisp evenings sitting on the porch with Barbara, early mornings in the garden and a still night on the shore with a line in the ocean. He loved a good nap, a challenging jigsaw puzzle, and there was nothing like a Sunday NASCAR race, only made better when his favorite driver, Jeff Gordon, was leading the pack.
Al’s most joyous occasion was when, after 18 years, he got to meet his daughter, Vicky.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander Grady Mallard and Wennie Royal Mallard; siblings, Dean Mallard, Linwood Mallard, Blanche Hodge, Catherine Rhyne, Lucille Andrews; and his two infant daughters.
Al is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Barbara Potter Mallard; daughter, Vicky Mallard Evans ( Jamal); granddaughters, Cori McQueen ( Dan), Shalee Wilcox (Bryan) and Cassie Evans; dear sister-in-law, Christine Potter; three great-grandchildren, Jack, Quinn and Benjamin; and many nieces and nephews.
Al was a man of few words, but his heart spoke volumes through the kindness and generosity he showed to family, friends and coworkers. All that knew and loved him were blessed beyond measure. He will be forever missed, but always in our hearts.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Travis, Charlie and Bernice and the staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice for all the care and kindness shown to Al through his illness.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 11, in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Victory Junction, 4500 Adam’s Way, Randleman, NC 27317; or a charity of your choice.
