Charlie O. Smith, 91, helped organize golf tournaments for The Shriners Hospitals for Children’

Charlie O. Smith, age 91, of Bayshore Estates in Wilmington, passed away Thursday February 18, 2016, at his home.

He was born on January 11, 1925, in Ash to Olen Smith and Katie Babson Smith. Charlie served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Charlie retired from Exxon Terminal in Wilmington with 33 years of service. After his retirement, he was an auto salesman at Bob King Pontiac.

Charlie was a member of Ogden Baptist Church, St. Johns Lodge #1 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite of Freemasons Valley of Wilmington, Sudan Shrine Center in New Bern, Sudan Drum & Bugle Corps, where he held the distinction of past captain, Arab Shrine Club and the Cape Fear Chapter # 346 Order of Eastern Star. Charlie enjoyed playing golf and helped organize many golf tournaments in our area for his favorite philanthropy, The Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Charlie O. was an avid outdoorsman. His favorite pastimes were all spent in the woods, on the water, or in the garden; but his favorite of all was his time spent with his family and friends.

Charlie is survived by his loving and faithful wife of 72 years Genevie “Jenny” Sneeden Smith; his twin daughters, Sharon West (Jim) and Donna Smith (Stuart); two sons, Olen Smith (Bobbi) and Mark Smith; seven grandchildren, Jamie Hornbrook (Chris), Jennifer West (Brian Dynof), David Smith (Ammie), Dr. Michael Smith (Erin), Megan Slaugenhoup (Will), Molly Smith, and Ernie Lane (Katie); eight great grandchildren, Rachel, Katie, and Gracen Hornbrook, Carlin and Harrison Smith, Emily and Alex Smith, and Riley Lane; and his faithful dog “Frankie”.

A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 22, at Scotts Hill Baptist Church, 185 Scotts Hill Loop Rd., Wilmington, NC 28411. The family will visit and greet friends an hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Oleander Memorial Gardens. Masonic funeral honors and military honors will be held at the grave site. Pallbearers will be Dr. Michael Smith, David Smith, Ernie Lane, Chris Hornbrook, Brian Dynof and Will Slaugenhoup. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Sudan Drum & Bugle Corps and his nephews, Irvin and Gary Hines.

In lieu of flowers, consider a memorial donation in Charlie’s name to the Ogden Baptist Church or Shriners Hospitals for Children.
