Joseph George Wahl, 83, a man with a quick wit and passion for gardening

Joseph George Wahl, 83, of St. James and formerly from Holmdel, New Jersey, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016 after a lengthy illness.

He was the husband of Patricia J. (Rydell) Wahl for 57 years.  Born Jan. 15, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of Joseph and Margaret Wahl.

Joe grew up in Hartford, Connecticut, where he was an Eagle Scout. He was a 1956 graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and a member of Phi Sigma Kappa. Upon graduation from WPI, Joe served in the U.S. Army. He began his career with W.R. Grace before starting
his business of Bayshore Chemical.

Joe enjoyed participating in scouting and town government while living in Holmdel and was active in community activities in St. James.  Time spent with his grandchildren was cherished by all of them.  Gardening was his passion and he was a certified Master Gardener. He enjoyed the beach, golf, tennis, bowling and the New York Times crossword.

Joe was known for his quick wit and ever-present sense of humor among his many friends and family.  He was a beloved husband of Patricia Wahl and loving father to Wende McCarthy (Jim) of St. James, Karen Fania (Jim) of Pittstown, New Jersey, Joseph and Michael.

Funeral services will be held at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Southport at noon on Friday,
Jan. 29.
