Carol Virginia Groner.

Carol Virginia (Carty) Groner, known to her family as “Grandy,” passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, Nov. 20.

Carol was born to parents Joseph and Dorothy Carty on Jan. 5, 1935 in Plainfield, New Jersey.

She spent two years in Japan and traveled the world before meeting her husband of 58 years at the University of Maryland. They raised three children in Somerset, New Jersey, where she also worked as the administrative assistant to the headmaster at Rutgers Preparatory School for 25 years before retiring to Carolina Shores.

Carol was a boxer dog lover, bridge player and proud member of the hole in one club. She was her grandchildren’s biggest fan.

She is survived by her husband, Will, their children Brian Groner (Debbie), Michelle Hynoski (Matt) and Scott Groner (Mily); their grandchildren, Kevin Zwick, Erin Ledbetter (Brandon), Melynda Brown (Chris), Stephen Groner and Megan Groner; their great-granddaughter, Nora Ledbetter; and her sister, Dorothy Boynton.  She is preceded in death by her brother, Greg Carty, and sister, Kathleen Foster.

A mass and celebration of Carol’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28 at St. Brendan Roman Catholic Church in Shallotte. Following the mass, a brief memorial service will be held as Carol’s ashes are laid to rest in the St. Brendan’s Columbarium, which she was instrumental in helping to build. Carol has left strict instructions for all attendees: “No black! Everyone wears their most colorful clothes. This is a celebration of life.”

Memorials may be made in her name to St. Brendan Roman Catholic Church, PO Box 2984, Shallotte, NC 28459.

Please leave online condolences for the family at Brunswick Funeral Service.
