John C. Heimlich Sr., of Holden Beach, died Nov. 11, 2015, at the age of 80.
John was born and raised in West Lafayette, Indiana and held bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Purdue University. After college, John joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. In 1964, John married Joan Egolf Heimlich, who was his wife for over 30 years. John resided in Somers, New York for many years and had a 25-year career at General Foods Corp.
In 1996, John retired to Holden Beach, where he was active in the community and town government. John was a certified master gardener and spent many hours in his yard and vegetable garden. He served on the Town of Holden Beach planning and zoning board and then served as a town commissioner. He loved playing bocce on the beach, betting on golf and enjoying his many friends in Holden Beach.
John is survived by his daughter, Mary H. Watkins and her husband, Jim Watkins; his son, John Jr.; and four grandchildren, Jimmy, Tommy, Billy and Joey Watkins.
A memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, at the Town of Holden Beach Pavilion.
