Joseph “Joe” Silva Howell died Thursday Nov. 12, 2015, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice with his family by his side after a long battle with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. He was 76.
He was born Jan. 20, 1929, to James Lineker and Helen Carney Howell, who preceded him in death, as well as his twin brother, Eugene Owen Howell and older brother, James Courtney Howell.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 54 years, Anne Brooks Howell; his son, Christopher Eugene (Laurie); light of his life, granddaughter, Meghan Grace and grandson, Christopher Joseph; sister-in-law, Peggy Pittman (Johnny); brother-in-law, Tom Carter (Teresa); sister-in-law, Ellen Howell; and many loved nieces and nephews.
After graduation from New Hanover High School in 1958, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, making it his career for 23 years and retiring as chief. He served two tours aboard the USS Roosevelt and the USS America. His last three years were spent at Fort Story in Virginia as support team for EOD (Explosive Ordinance Demolition).
His next career was with the U.S. Postal Service for 17 years where he was safety office and ODIS inspector, traveling to other post offices to preform audits of mail delivery. Upon retirement in 2000 he and Anne enjoyed spending time with family and friends and entertaining.
He was a most loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.
A man of many talents, artistic and a perfectionist, he enjoyed gardening, woodworking, cooking “Buck-bites” venison and doing all the “honey-do” projects Anne dreamed up. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t tackle. One of his greatest pleasures was directing the annual Easter egg hunt he organized for the grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friend’s children who all lovingly called him “Gandy” named by Meghan.
“Fair winds and following seas”

Per his wishes, there will be a celebration of life from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, 2015, at the Terraces on Sir Tyler, 1826 Sir Tyler Drive, Wilmington.
