She and her husband returned to Wilmington in 2010, having lived the intervening years in Atlanta, Georgia.

Mrs. Sheffield is survived by her husband of 68 years, Walter Lincoln Sheffield, of Wilmington and by one of her sons, Walter L. Sheffield III and his wife Sarah Sheffield, of Cary. She also is survived by four grandchildren, Devon Sheffield, of Houston, Texas, Wesley H. Sheffield and his wife Bette Sheffield, of Memphis, Tennessee, Tessa L. Sheffield and David D. Sheffield, both of Atlanta and one great-grandchild, Lydia E. Sheffield, of Memphis, Tennessee.

Mrs. Sheffield was preceded in death by her other son, Douglas C. Sheffield and a brother, Robert O. Smith, of Jackson, Mississippi.

The Sheffield family gratefully acknowledge the care and assistance provided to Mrs. Sheffield in her last months by many people, in particular Kathy Tattersall and Diane Lanier and Essie Hawes of Senior Helpers.
