Ernest Monroe Smith, 70, former GE aircraft engineer

Ernest Monroe Smith, 70, of Ash, died Monday, Sept. 14, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Smith was born on February 13, 1945 in Brunswick County, a son of the late Ernest Garland and Vera Hughes Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.

He was an aircraft engineer with General Electric and past owner and operator of Monroe’s Garage.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Thelma Nelson Smith; daughter, Shonda Ward (Tony) of Calabash; two sons, Ernie Smith (Jennifer) of Ash and Kevin Smith (Lee) of Shallotte; four brothers, Lennon Smith (Avis) of Ash, Charlie Smith (Alice) of Ash, Roger Smith (Delilah) of Supply and Danny Smith (Janice) of Ash; five sisters, Cally Miller (Billy) of Wilmington, Lois Milliken (Terry) of Ash, Elizabeth Phillips (Lester) of Ash, Debbie Norris (William) of Shallotte, Evelyn Carpenter (Tommy) of Supply; four grandchildren, Makayla and Curtis Ward and Caroline and Ben Smith; and a sister-in-law, Ree Sloan (Andy) of Leland.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, at Soldier Bay Baptist Church, where he was a member. His brother, the Rev. Charlie Smith, will lead the services. Burial will follow in the Smith Family Cemetery. Casket bearers will be his nephews.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the funeral home.
