
Alvin G. “Gil” Pettit III, of Wrightsville Beach, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2014, at the age of 54.
He was born in Winston-Salem on June 6, 1960, son of Marilyn Hedrick Pettit, of Winston-Salem and the late Alvin Gilderoy Pettit Jr. Dr. Pettit graduated from North Carolina State University in 1982 and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in 1988 and established his dental practice in Wilmington.
An active outdoorsman, Gil enjoyed surfing, windsurfing, hunting, camping, riding his motorcycle and most importantly spending time with his boys. He was an Eagle Scout and served as a scoutmaster. Gil was a member of the Cape Fear Rotary Club and very strong in his faith as a member of Grace Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, Dr. Pettit is survived by his wife, Kim Pettit and their children, Austin, Bryce and Liston Pettit; his sister, Anne Brooke Lazorik and husband, Robert, of Denver and their children, Michael Thomas and Sarah Anne Lazorik; a sister-in-law, Sonya Davis and husband, Allan, of Spanish Fort, Alabama and their children, Olivia, Parker and Avery Ella Davis; a brother-in-law, Kyle Hines and wife, Lauren, of Wilmington and their daughter, Anna Davis Hines; and parents-in-law, Larry Hines and wife, Sue, of Wilmington; uncle, David and aunt, Rachel Greene and their children, David Greene, Sarah Greene and Genie Greene Saffer; numerous cousins; and his maternal grandmother, Sarah Turner Hedrick, of Lenoir.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 2014, at Grace Baptist Church, 1401 North College Road, Wilmington, NC, 28405, with Pastor Jay Knolls officiating.
