LaVada Helton Bevel, of Southport, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014, at Ocean Trail Nursing Center. She was 95.
Mrs. Bevel was born Feb. 25, 1919, in Alabama, the daughter of the late Oliver and Mexie Helton. She was a member of Southport Baptist Church and a member of the Order of The Eastern Star in Alabama. Mrs. Helton had volunteered with the American Red Cross and was one of the Dosher Memorial Hospital “Gray Ladies.”
She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris E. Bevel; son, Morris E. Bevel, Jr.; two brothers, Leo and Roy Helton; and a sister, Sylvia Williams.
Surviving is her daughter, Patricia “Pat” Smith and husband, Tommy, of Holden Beach; a son, James H. Bevel and wife, Sue, of Wagner, Okla; six grandchildren, Donna S. Campbell, Ellis Daniel Sellers, Deborah B. Cooper, Ray Bevel, Jimmy Bevel and Stephanie B. Rowley; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Harriett W. Bevel.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, at Peacock – Newnam & White Funeral Service. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Gene Tomlinson officiating. Burial will follow at Northwood Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff of Ocean Trail Nursing Center for the excellent care given to Mrs. Bevel during her stay there.
