Charles Reynolds Kernan, Jr., 93, flew for pleasure as a private pilot traveling extensively with his wife

Charles Reynolds Kernan, Jr., of Wilmington, died Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was 93.

He was born in Manchester, Ga. in 1921. After his family moved to Columbus, Ga. in the late 1920s, he attended Industrial and Columbus High Schools. After serving in WWII in the U.S. Army Air Corps, he continued his education at Auburn and Georgia Tech where he received a master’s in mechanical engineering.

His work carried his family all over the eastern part of the country where he enjoyed camping and fishing. As a private pilot he flew for pleasure and with the Civil Air Patrol. In their later years, he and his wife traveled extensively.

He leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Mary Josephine (Pat) Ford Kernan and one son, Charles and his wife, Janette, of Wilmington.

No services have been announced.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Wesley United Methodist Church of Wilmington.
