
Fran Stevens Sherman died June 3, 2014, with her family at her side after a long illness. She was 90.
She was an inspired and talented fashion illustrator, artist and sculptor. One of her latest sculptures, that of Jay Robinson, is prominently placed in the building named for him at UNCW. She was an avid tennis player, gardener and bridge partner. She lived to enjoy life and its mysteries. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, wonderful homemaker and special friend to many.
Art was her passion. She studied at UNCW and at an artist colony in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Her athleticism and competitive spirit were expressed in her tennis and included a trip to Mexico with a leading tennis team from Florida. She had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel the world with her loving husband, Lee.
She is survived by her husband, Col. Lee M. Sherman and children, Bob Sieker, Kellie Burke Trivers and Jody Burke. She was known as “Franmommy” to Kimberly Clark, Jodie Beare, Rebecca Burke and Graham Burke and “great-Franmommy” to Shannon and Samantha Clark. She was stepmother of Linda Retz, Rene Jones and Julie Dube anda loving aunt to Mary Frances Clark, Steven Robbins, Rocky Robbins, Gayle Gunter and Gwen Gaither.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 8, 2014, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel with Chaplain Joe Jankowiak officiating. The family will receive friends at the mortuary one hour prior to the service.
With sincere gratitude to Mrs. Sherman’s wonderful caregivers, the family wishes that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
