Ellen Larue Hopkins, 72, known as a “giver” who focused on making others happy

Ellen Larue Hopkins, of Carolina Beach, died Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was 72.

Mrs. Hopkins loved sports, especially softball, and she played basketball. She was definitely a “giver” who always made others happy before herself, never saying “No.” She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

She was born May 20, 1941, in Laurinburg, daughter of the late Wallace Bradley and Emma Lee Williamson Bradley. Her husband of 53 years, Miles Hopkins, son, Mike Hopkins and brother, Earl Bradley, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her son, Larry Joe Hopkins (Dulcie); daughter, Susan Kaye Hopkins; four grandchildren, Donald Ray Hopkins (Kristie), Brandon Tyler Hopkins, Miles Robert Angel and Ellen Denise Hopkins Shatswell; 11 great-grandchildren, Tilan Gage Hopkins, Nathan Miles Hopkins, Kayla Sky Hopkins, Brandon Tyler Hopkins, Jr., Isaac Angel, Jaiden Angel, LaSun Johnson, Vendell Williams, Van Williams, Antonio Williams and Isaiah Williams; sister-in-law and best friend, Ora Hopkins; and her beloved cat of 21 years, Cailey.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at Andrews Valley Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at Andrews Valley Chapel with Pastor George Kapusta officiating. Entombment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.
