Orrin Lane Macy, a Wilmington resident since 2003, died Jan. 4, 2014, in Wilmington. He was 93.

Mr. Macey was born Aug. 22, 1920, in Vancouver to American parents, Cromwell Gardner Macy, Jr. and Irma Cotten Macy, but moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. as a toddler. He served in the Army Transportation Corps during the WWII, making many Atlantic crossings with troops or cargo. His duties aboard included conducting special service programs, giving lectures, orientations and broadcasts. He also ran motion pictures for the troops and handled personnel affairs and athletic activities.

Upon discharge, Mr. Macy majored in marketing at NYU School of Economics and built a career in advertising sales for Gourmet Magazine, then Family Circle (the NY Times Magazine Division). He retired from there in 1986 to the home he helped build on Nantucket Island, Mass. and was a year-round resident there for 18 years. He was proud to be an 11th generation Macy; Thomas Macy was one of the founding settlers in 1659.

He was extremely knowledgeable about jazz music, played guitar since his early teens and was a member of a businessman’s big band during the 1960s. Athletics included tennis (he was a linesman in NYC for major tournaments), sailing and golf. Mr. Macy was also a member of Union Lodge (N) F. & A.M. in Nantucket, Mass.

In addition to his wife, Mildred Maney Macy, his survivors include nieces, Christine Macy Feroli (Ron) and Barbara Macy (Mrs. Donald); nephew, Thomas Macy; 10 grand and great-grandnieces and nephews; and two first cousins, Ardeth Fraim Spencer (Jack) and Warren “Sonny” Fraim. Also William and Shirley Maney and their daughters, Kathryn Cowles, Beth Struckell and Maureen Boner.

The family is very grateful to friends and the staffs of both hospice and the Commons at Brightmore for their loving care and compassion during Orrin’s illness.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel with the Rev. Sweetie Francis officiating. Music will be provided by Grenoldo Frazier.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC, 28401.

Please leave online condolences for the family at Andrews Mortuary.
