Justus Muller Sistrunk, 92, stationed in Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was bombed

Justus Muller Sistrunk died in Statesville Dec. 31, 2013, at the age of 92.

He was born to Minnie Viola Bowen and Simpson Fuller Sistrunk on Christmas Eve 1921 in Chester, S.C., the fourth of five children.

As a young child his family moved to Wilmington where he graduated from New Hanover High School in 1939. He joined the U.S. Army the following year and was stationed at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii. He was stationed there when Pearl Harbor was bombed and stayed on to work and live in Hawaii for 41 years. He married Thelma Kanahele and they had four children. He lived a number of years in Washington State and again in Wilmington.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Fuller and James; sister, Margaret Britt; son, Jeffrey; and grandson, Michael.

He is survived by his sister, Betty Davis; children, Judith (Richard) Maxfield, Joni (Eric) Wohllaib, Jay (Kathleen) Sistrunk; daughter-in-law, Rene’ Sistrunk; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

We invite you to a celebration of his life, beginning with a viewing at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel, 1617 Market Street, with the funeral service starting at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
