Charles “Chuck” Schweis, 79, a pioneer in the telecommunications industry

Charles “Chuck” Schweis, of Wilmington, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at Duke University Hospital, Durham. He was 79.

Mr. Schweis proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a pioneer in the telecommunications industry starting from Morse code to the modern computer age until his retirement from Ciba-Geigy, N.Y., in 1991. Five years ago, he was the first recipient in the Wilmington area of the then experimental LVAD mechanical heart.

He was born Aug. 8, 1934 in Brooklyn, N.Y. and was preceded in death by his parents, William Schweis and Pearl Cuthbertson Schweis; brother, John Schweis; and grandson, Frankie Bucci.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marion Schweis; children, Noreen Schweis Munson, Hanns “Chuck” Schweis, Debra Schweis Murphy, Mary Schweis Luciano, Russell Schweis and Denise “Beany” Bucci; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brothers, William Schweis and Fred Schweis; and sister, Kathleen Schweis McGee.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. John McGee officiating. Inurnment will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Park at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Schweis’ memory may be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Building Fund, 6650 Carolina Beach Road, Wilmington, NC 28412.
