John Marlin ‘Tinner’ Moore enjoyed a life played out well.
Mr. Moore died Oct. 5, 2013 at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick on Oct. 5, 2013.
He graduated from high school at just 16 years old and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy. The GI bill he received afterwards allowed him to attend Gettysburg College, where he became a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and met his future wife, Connie.
Eventually, he transferred to Dickinson College and graduated with a degree in business. From there he worked for Allstate Insurance in Roanoke, Va. before transferring in 1962 to Security Life and Trust Co. in Winston-Salem.
In Winston-Salem Mr. Moore was active in Messiah Moravian Church as an usher, Sunday school teacher and elder. He felt blessed in 1969 to be chosen as the first acoluth of Messiah. In fact, he was the first acoluth in the entire Southern Province of the Moravian Church. This title allowed him to assist the minister by serving communion.
Mr. Moore retired in 1986 as the senior system analyst for Integon Ins. Corp. Retirement is about relaxing, something Mr. Moore knew he wanted for himself and his wife, so they moved to Fancy Gap, Va. to enjoy their mountaintop cabin, a favorite place of theirs during their working years. Mr. Moore fully indulged his love of the outdoors and beauty of the mountains, a love developed during his days as an Eagle Scout in Philadelphia where he was born.
Mr. Moore is preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Anna Basehore Moore; his wife of 53 years, Constance Cramer Moore; brothers, Ludwell, Harold and Eugene; and sister, Thelma Moore Crozier.
He is survived by daughters, Leslie Spearman and husband Robert, Laurie Rhodes and husband, Scott; son, Lee Moore and wife, Janice; grandchildren, Matthew and Taylor Rhodes, Haley and Cramer Moore; step-grandson, Daniel Spearman and wife, Michelle; great-grandchildren, Maddie and Fisher Spearman; and nieces and nephews.
Mr. Moore’s funeral will be held at Messiah Moravian Church, 1401 N. Peace Haven Road, Winston-Salem on Oct. 10, 2013, at 4 p.m. The family will greet friends an hour before the service.
On line condolences may be sent to www.brunswickfuneralservice.com.
The family would like to thank Dr. Peter Zeman, Julie, and Fran at Urology Assoc. for their loving care of Mr. Moore and for always making him feel special. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Dr, Wilmington, NC 28401.
