NORTH CAROLINA — Starting Monday and lasting through Dec. 1, law enforcement are increasing patrols to focus on increased safety.
The N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program asks everyone to buckle up while traveling throughout Thanksgiving holiday travels. A statewide “Click It or Ticket” enforcement campaign takes place Nov. 25 through Dec. 1. The campaign is overseen by the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program.
“For most, Thanksgiving means community gatherings, family, friends and food but every year, for a small number of North Carolinians, Thanksgiving means tragedy,” GHSP Director Mark Ezzell said in a release. “It means that somebody has to knock on the door and tell someone that a loved one is not coming home because they did not wear their seat belt.”
According to statistics from the state, 495 people died in unbuckled crashes last year. Those who choose not to wear a seatbelt not only endangers their life but also faces
$187 in fines and fees if receiving a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt.
