WILMINGTON — Meet Romeo and Willie.

Those are the names of Wilmington Police Department’s two new horses to join its mounted unit.

A naming competition was held, with the public submitting more than 1,500 entries, according to the WPD.

“We greatly appreciate all who submitted ideas for these names,” WPD said in a statement.

The horses are assigned to downtown patrols and community engagement.

WPD will offer the public a chance to meet Willie and Romeo — and the rest of the mounted unit — during New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office National Night Out, hosted Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Long Leaf Park.
