Law enforcement will be strengthening patrols in the coming week ahead of Halloween in an effort to thwart drivers who are impaired from being on the road.
Checkpoints and saturation patrols will be set up as part of the statewide Booze It & Lose It campaign, taking place from Oct. 24 to 31. Mark Ezzell, director of the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program, encourages people to find a designated driver and planning ahead for a sober ride home rather than getting behind the wheel after imbibing.
“Many families will be hitting the streets this Halloween season to enjoy trick-or-treating and we want everyone to have a good time,” said Mark Ezzell, director of the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program. “People who drink and drive can turn a good time into a tragedy.”
So far in 2022 in the state, there have been over 250 people killed in alcohol-related accidents; last year 423 people died from drinking and driving. The Highway Safety Patrol reports 28 occurred during last Halloween’s Booze It & Lose It campaign period.
