WILMINGTON — An anonymous donation will give Novant’s oncology and hematology services a boost.

A Wilmington family, who received “exceptional care” at the hospital provided by Dr. Anthony Dominick and the Zimmer Cancer Institute team, pledged $500,000 to the Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation.

The donation launched a new fund at the foundation, which will cover staff education and community outreach. It will also be used specifically to support patients at Novant Health Zimmer Cancer Institute, which offers social and financial support, nutritional counseling, and patient navigation in addition to survivorship care support for families.

Program enhancements for oncology and hematology services to be made with the funds include patient navigation and case management to directly impact those undergoing cancer treatment. Navigators connect patients with resources and serve as a link between individuals and their care teams.

“We are profoundly grateful to this family for their generous gift, and it is especially touching that they were motivated by a positive care experience to help support future patients,” Schorr Davis, the foundation’s executive director, said in a press release.

Earlier this year, the American Cancer Society awarded Novant Health NHRMC the inaugural Health System/Patient Support Team of the Year Award for 2021, a national honor presented in recognition of achievements in improving the lives of cancer patients and their families.

“We are proud of the care we provide the region, but never more so than when we receive the sincere gratitude from a patient and their family,” Dr. Michael Papagikos, clinical physician executive for the Novant Health Cancer Institute-Coastal region, said in the release.
