SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Over a million dollars in grants have been disbursed throughout North Carolina. Among them is a nonprofit recipient in Pender County that works with homeless mothers to secure long-term shelter.
Roots of Recovery will receive $42,800 from the North Carolina Healing Communities Fund. Since last year the foundation has allocated almost $5.5 million and 149 grants statewide.
The latest round of $1.25 million comes from its final tranche of Covid-19 relief funds, aimed at helping organizations impacted by revenue loss and demand for increased services.
North Carolina Healing Communities Fund doled out over 40 grants, between $25,000 and $55,000, to 30 counties in the state in this round. Contributions to the fund were made by corporations and foundations, including State Employees’ Credit Union Foundation, The Duke Endowment, Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, First Citizens Bank, Anonymous Trust, Jonas Foundation, Barnhill Family Foundation, Novartis Foundation, Fidelity Bank and the North Carolina Community Foundation.
Focused on nonprofits that serve marginalized communities, money was spent in areas to help people of color, communities of lower wealth, in mostly rural areas, and where English is not the primary language.
An advisory committee of representatives from the nonprofit, health, and human services sectors, rural and faith communities, and other partners helped select the grantees.
“We have heard from the organizations that received grants that this funding was truly a lifeline for their communities, and we are honored to have helped support them,” said Jennifer Tolle Whiteside, NCCF CEO and president.
Roots for Recovery offers women housing, peer-support services, employment preparation and support, and more. Primarily, the nonprofit works with women who are homeless, women with children, and pregnant women to overcome abuse, addiction, or poverty.
