Brunswick nuclear plant sirens to be tested Oct. 12

SOUTHPORT — Duke Energy and county officials will sound the outdoor warning siren at the Brunswick Nuclear Plant next week.

Sometime between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Oct. 12, the 38 sirens within 10 miles of the nuclear plant will sound at full volume for three minutes. To ensure they’re functioning properly, emergency officials may need to be test the sirens more than once.

Because this is a test, local broadcasting stations will not interrupt regular programming to broadcast Emergency Alert System (EAS) messages. If there were ever a real emergency at the plant requiring the sirens to be sounded, local radio and television stations would broadcast information and instructions to the public.
