WILMINGTON — On Saturday afternoon, officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of Fall Drive to serve a warrant. The call went awry when the suspect fled the scene on foot.
A 27-year-old, Daekwon Pearce, from Rocky Point was located running near the Greenfield Lake area. According to the Wilmington Police Department, he escaped into thick brush, near the lake’s embankment.
Officers dispatched Southeastern North Carolina Airborne Law Enforcement (SABLE) to do a sweep of the area and saw Pearce attempt to swim across the lake.
“As officers were preparing to enter the lake, the suspect began to drown and called for help,” WPD noted in a press release.
At a low altitude, SABLE was able fly just above the lake to drop a life jacket for the suspect. An officer jumped in to rescue Pearce and take him to the shore. EMS then transported the suspect to Novant Health NHRMC.
The police have charged Pearce with resist, delay, and obstruct and for communicating threats per the search warrant.
He is being held at the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.
