CAROLINA BEACH — The annual Carolina Beach Double Sprint Triathlon is returning to the Cape Fear for the 25th year. Travelers should be advised Dow Road will be closed to traffic between Cape Fear Boulevard to the Kure Beach line from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday.
Launched in 1997 as the Kure Beach Double Sprint, the race’s unique format has participants starting and ending with the swim. The race starts at 8 a.m. and features two 375-meter swims, two 1.5-mile runs and a 20-K bike ride sandwiched in the middle.
There are currently more than 150 participants signed up, ranging in age from 20 to 80 and hailing from around the mid-Atlantic, including North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and two from as far as Vermont and Pennsylvania.
Awards will be given to the top three racers in multiple categories: advanced, various age groups, novice athletes and weight groups.
Free parking will be available at Carolina Beach Elementary School and on the north side of Carolina Lake. Paid lots are located near the start/finish line and the Marriott Courtyard.
The USA Triathlon-sanctioned event must be completed in under 2-and-a-half hours and the minimum age to join is 10 years old.
