NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Known as the “city of a million azaleas,” the springtime blooms in the Cape Fear region have taken a hit over the last three years due to hurricanes. Monday, as part of the kick off to the 75th annual N.C. Azalea Festival, “Plant an Azalea Week” starts.
The New Hanover County Parks and Gardens and the Parks Conservancy of New Hanover County have partnered with the Cape Fear Garden Club, Inc. Civic Improvements Committee to encourage the public to plant their own azaleas Apr. 4 – 10.
“When you think of New Hanover County, one of the first things you associate with this area are the azaleas. People visit to see their beautiful blooms and colors during the early part of spring,” Tara Duckworth, director of parks and gardens, said in a release. “We are certainly excited to add more of these beautiful plants to our parks and hope others in our county will take the opportunity to do the same at their own homes.”
An event is planned for Monday, Apr. 4, 11 a.m., at River Road Park (6500 River Rd.) to help with azalea bush recovery efforts. County officials, parks staff and members of the Cape Fear Garden Club will help with the planting. The event is open to the public as well.
