WILMINGTON — According to law enforcement officials, both from the Wilmington Police Department and New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, there has been an uptick in car break-ins over the last month, specifically in county parks.

Valuables are being stolen in plain sight, police officers said. They’re reminding drivers to protect valuables, by securing items like purses, wallets, laptops, cell phones, GPS or even a cup holder full of change out of sight, such as in the trunk, before arriving to the location so no one can see you.

“Leaving these items on the floorboard, under the seat or covering them does not keep them safe and can often broadcast that you may be concealing something of value in your car,” the sheriff’s office noted.

Not only should this be done when at area parks but also in parking lots at malls, shopping centers, grocery stores, etc.

The Wilmington Police Department is asking for information about the female pictured, who may be connected to the break-ins. Tips can be made through the 411 app or by calling WPD at 910-343-3609.
