200K gallons of untreated wastewater discharged in Navassa

BRUNSWICK COUNTY — According to a press release from Brunswick County Public Utilities, untreated wastewater discharged in Navassa on Saturday.

Around 200,000 to 210,000 gallons leaked into the tributary of Cartwheel Branch, part of the Cape Fear River basin.

An uninterrupted power supply (UPS) failed during startup testing of the Northeast Brunswick Regional WWTP expansion at 10480 Royster Rd. The release noted the “failure of the UPS caused an influent control valve to fail in a closed position, which in turn caused an overflow of the equalization pump station.”

The incident took place around 2:55 p.m. and plant staff were alerted by 4 p.m. by a contractor on site.

“Due to the UPS failure, there was no alarm generated until staff bypassed the failed unit after arrival at approximately 5 p.m.,” the release continued.

Staff were able to manually manipulate the valve and avert overflow by 5:10 p.m.
They also recovered remaining onsite wastewater and lime stabilized affected areas with a vacuum truck.
