SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Moores Creek National Battlefield will be closed Tuesday, Mar. 22. A controlled burn is scheduled to get underway for five hours.
The burn will begin at 10 a.m. and last until 3 p.m. or so. Residual smoke and small spot fires may continue through the evening.
According to a press release, affected areas include the Southwest Unit, Savanna Unit and an adjacent 48-acre property.
The burns help reduce “fuel loads” that collect and can start a major forest fire. It also helps the park revert to its historical look at the time of the battle in 1776, by reducing invasive weedy trees.
The park will reopen on Wednesday, Mar. 23.
