NEW HANOVER COUNTY — On Thursday, Apr. 8, 20-year-old Wilmingtonian Brandyn Queen pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of 19-year-old Tomar Bloodworth.
Queen was sentenced up to 13 years in the department of adult corrections, while his best friend, 21-year-old Devontae Mitchell pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to second-degree murder. Mitchell lied to detectives about the crime, specifically about who shot Bloodworth, and will serve up to five years. Mitchell originally tried to blame the crime on a juvenile who was with him and Queen during the night of the incident.
Bloodworth’s murder took place on Chestnut Street on May 8, 2018, after Mitchell planned a marijuana purchase from the victim. An argument ensued when Queen shot him in the abdomen with a .22 caliber handgun. Bloodworth shot back while the driver of his vehicle drove off and took Bloodworth to NHRMC where he died.
Mitchell admitted to authorities about contacting Bloodworth to buy marijuana, but blamed a juvenile for shooting Bloodworth. According to authorities, the juvenile copped up to being with the perpetrators during the marijuana purchase, but said it was them who shot Bloodworth yet conspired to place blame on him because of his age.
