Pender County announces closures as extreme weather approaches

The Pender County Covid-19 call center will close at 3 p.m. Thursday. Other county facilities are expected to shutter early as well with extreme weather expected this afternoon.

“In preparation for the multi-hazard severe weather event expected this afternoon and evening, Pender County will close all county parks and the Holly Shelter Shooting Range at 3 p.m. today,” according to a county press release.

County libraries and offices will close at 4 p.m. while convenience sites and the Hampstead Transfer Station will shutter at 5 p.m.

There will be heightened risk for severe thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and evening.

“The numerous to widespread severe thunderstorms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts more than 60 mph, a few tornadoes, and large hail,” according to the county. “In addition, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is also expected, especially with the more intense storms.”

The Pender County Emergency Operations Center will be monitoring the approaching storm front.
