NEW HANOVER COUNTY — A new duo will oversee the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners meeting in the 2026 year.

During its Dec. 15 meeting, the board voted unanimously to elect both LeAnn Pierce as chair and Dane Scalise as vice chair. Every December the board decides on its new leadership to serve one-year terms. Previously, Bill Rivenbark served as chair and Pierce as vice chair.

“Serving as Chair is an honor and a responsibility I take seriously,” Pierce said in a county press release. “Over the past year, this Board has focused on protecting our natural resources, investing in public safety and infrastructure, and making thoughtful decisions that support our community’s long-term health. I appreciate the collaborative work of my fellow Commissioners and look forward to continuing that work in the year ahead.”

Pierce is elected to the top leader position as her term expires in December 2026; she has filed for re-election. However, Scalise, elected to serve as commissioner through December 2028, has announced his run for a House seat — District 20 — as Republican Ted Davis steps down.

“Our community expects us to be responsible stewards of public resources while protecting the quality of life that makes New Hanover County a great place to live,” Scalise said in a press release upon his vice chair announcement. “I’m committed to delivering essential services efficiently, supporting public safety, and making balanced decisions that serve residents today and in the future.”

Filing for the 2026 board of commissioners race closes Friday. So far Democrats Rob Zapple, Salette Andrews, Judy Justice, and LeShonda Wallace are slated to campaign, as well as Republicans Pierce and Richard Collier (the latter of whom ran for city council last year).
