The Agenda: Government meetings this week

Multiple meetings take place in Brunswick County this week, from commissioners to Southport Board of Aldermen, H2Go water board to Brunswick County Board of Elections. (Courtesy photo)

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Every Monday Port City Daily will share upcoming government and community meetings around the tri-county region. If there’s an item of public interest, it will be included, too.

Monday, Dec. 1

CANCELLED: The Southport Board of Aldermen will host a regular meeting at 9 a.m. at the Southport Community Building. An agenda was not available. Meetings are livestreamed here

The Pender County Board of Commissioners will meet at 6 p.m., 805 S. Walker Street in Burgaw. The agenda includes swearing in new county manager Colby Sawyer and consideration of an updated fire prevention and protection ordinance. The meeting will livestream here.

Pender County Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 10 a.m. in the Dr. Katherine Herring Resource Center, 798 U.S. Highway 117. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • JH Lea mascot selection
  • School improvement plans

The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will meet at 3 p.m., 30 Government Center Drive in Bolivia. The agenda includes information from the county manager regarding county funding of the fire service for FY 2027, including a potential $10-$12 million general fund subsidy and plans for adopting revised service contracts; consideration of a request that the board consider transferring 17.5 acres to Brunswick Community College for fire service and driving pad training facilities. Brunswick Regional Water and Sewer H2Go will meet at 5 p.m. at 146 Gregory Road in  Belville at the RO Water Treatment Plant Training Room. The agenda includes:

  • Installation of new board members
  • 2026 meeting schedule

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is proposing a 1.7-mile extension of Independence Boulevard to improve mobility and reduce traffic congestion through central Wilmington. An open house and public hearing will take place on Monday, Dec. 1, 5 p.m., at Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington Cafeteria, 4100 Sunglow Dr. Read PCD coverage here and learn more from NCDOT about the project here.

Tuesday, Dec. 2

Wilmington Housing Authority’s Community Outreach and Resident Services (CORS) Committee will meet at Creekwood at 3 p.m. An agenda was not posted by press.

The Wilmington City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. in city hall, 929 N. Front St. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes the oaths of office for new council members. Read PCDc coverage here.

New Hanover County Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. in the Board of Education Center, 1805 S. 13th St. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • Reallocation of savings 
  • Resolution for EC funding

The Wrightsville Beach Planning Board will host a regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. at council chambers in Town Hall. An agenda was not available. Recordings are uploaded here

The Southport Board of Aldermen will host a special workshop at 6 p.m. at the Southport Community Building. An agenda was not available. Meetings are livestreamed here

The Brunswick County Board of Elections will meet at 10 a.m. in commissioners’ chambers, 30 Government Center Dr. Meetings can be streamed here. The agenda includes:

  • 2026 Primary Election Early Voting Plan — for the board to discuss locations and the schedule for the 2026 primary election early voting period
  • 2026 meeting schedule

The Surf City Town Council will meet at 4:30 p.m. in the Surf City Municipal Complex. The agenda includes the swearing-in ceremony for newly elected council member Andy Pleil and re-elected incumbent Hugh Cannady. Also, the council will elect the Mayor Pro Tempore and will consider a site plan for a Hampton Inn. The meeting will livestream here.

The Town of North Topsail Beach Board of Alderman will meet at 11 a.m., in the Town Hall, 2008 Loggerhead Court. The agenda includes the oaths of office for newly elected mayor Richard Grant and aldermen Larry Strother, Kip Malcolm, and Mark Barefoot. Also, the board will discuss electric bikes on the beach. The Pender County Planning Board will meet at 6 p.m., 805 S. Walker Street in Burgaw. The agenda includes a public hearing for a Master Development Plan Revision for Lanes Ferry Landing, a mixed-use project totaling 2,750 residential units (including single-family and multi-family) located north and south of NC Highway 210 near Moore Town Road. Also, consideration of a zoning text amendment to update UDO for waiting periods for refiling rezoning applications. The meeting will livestream here

Brunswick County Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. in the The Center of Applied Sciences and Technology, 1109 Old Ocean Highway. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • Financial audit
  • Performance bonuses for exceeding growth 

Wednesday, Dec. 3

Wilmington Planning Commission will meet at 6 p.m. in city hall, 929 N. Front St. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • Amend City Code Chapter 18 to amend the dimensional standards and duplex design standards in the R-3 residential district

The Kure Beach Planning & Zoning Commissioner will host a regular meeting at 6 p.m. at Town Hall. An agenda was not available. Recordings are uploaded here

Wave Transit will meet at 4 p.m. to discuss proposed adjustments to several routes. Following a presentation, staff will be available for questions and discussion. Customers and community members are encouraged to attend at Padgett Station, 520 N 3rd St. Wilmington. See the plan here.

Cape Fear Public Utility Authority has three committee meetings scheduled Wednesday in the Jordan Room at 235 Government Dr. The first is the Finance Committee at 9 a.m., to discuss multiple contracts such as $11.7M to Carolina Civilworks Inc. for the River Road Booster Pump Station and Waterline Interconnect, and $2.3M for A.C. Schultes of Carolina, Inc. for the FY 2026 Find-It-Fix-It Water and Sewer Repairs Project. The Executive Committee meets at 10 a.m. and the Long Range Planning Committee at 1 p.m., which will include updates on Wastewater Flow Update and Leveraging Flow Diversion and on 54-Inch Diameter Raw Water Main Project.

The ILM Airport Authority will meet at 5 p.m. in the ILM Executive Conference Room. The meeting agenda includes updates on the Part 150 Noise Study (read PCD coverage here), and on the construction/capital improvements report. A 2027 air show will also be discussed.

Thursday, Dec. 4

The Southport Board of Adjustment will host a regular meeting at 4:30 p.m. at the Indian Trail Meeting Hall. An agenda was not available. Meetings are uploaded here

The New Hanover County Planning Board will meet at 6 p.m. in the NHC Courthouse, 24 N. Third St. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • Special Use Permit – (S25-05 – Big Apple RV Park)
  • Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) Amendment – Comprehensive Plan Implementation and Maintenance

Wilmington Housing Authority’s Finance and Development (F&D) Committee will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the main office, 1524 S 16th St. The purpose of the meeting is to review and discuss matters relating to the Wilmington Housing Authority and these are public meetings.
