Brunswick commissioners, school board to meet to discuss additional officers in schools

Members of the Brunswick County Board of Education will meet with Brunswick County commissioners for their liaison meeting Monday.

The meeting, scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, will be in the board room of the Brunswick County Schools administration building in Bolivia.

Brunswick County Schools Spokeswoman Jessica Swencki said she expects the topic of law enforcement presence at Brunswick County elementary schools and its funding to be discussed at the meeting.

“The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and Brunswick County Board of Education continue to collaborate for the safety and security of all students and staff in light of the tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary School,” Swencki said.

Last month, Superintendent Edward Pruden announced Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies will be at all Brunswick County elementary schools until “further notice.”

Pruden announced deputies would be at all elementary schools in the days following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., where 20 children and six adults were gunned down at the school.

In New Hanover County, board of education members have made a similar request of commissioners for the county’s elementary schools. At their pre-agenda meeting Thursday, commissioners discussed the proposal with New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon.

New Hanover County Commissioners are expected to discuss the topic at their regular meeting Monday.
